In grades K-5 Potomac uses Math in Focus (MIF), a program based on Singapore Math model. The program focuses on an in-depth understanding of mathematical concepts and problem solving. In grade 6, students transition to an internally developed math program also based on the Singapore math model, with multiple tiers of challenging problems. The mathematics curriculum seeks to help students realize their full potential as mathematical thinkers. Throughout the Middle School years, conceptual and skill development is embedded in problem-solving activities to encourage deep understanding. There is also increasing exposure to algebraic reasoning and abstraction.
Through experimentation and play, students are encouraged to discover the possibilities of materials in order to develop imaginative and creative solutions to structured artistic challenges.
