Grade 8 on the Bay
A group of eighth graders recently spent three days working as “watermen” with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation on Port Isobel Island.
All Potomac students engage in foundational service learning experiences connected to four community needs: hunger, homelessness, and poverty; literacy; the elderly; and the environment. They become empowered by a greater understanding of these needs and lead or participate in activities such as:
- Kindergarten Butterfly Garden
Kindergarten classes have planted a butterfly garden, that includes butterfly bush, asters, and black-eyed susans, at the bottom of the lower school playground. The young students care for the garden throughout the school year as part of their grade-level service learning experience focused on the environment. - Seventh Grade, Second Story
Each fall, seventh graders host a group of young students from Second Story for an evening of outdoor exploration, including a scavenger hunt on the nature trails and s’mores at the Morton Fire Deck. The event builds connections between Potomac students and their Second Story friends and connects to the grade 7 Frameworks of Identity curriculum. - Ninth Grade, Community Action Program
In the spring, ninth graders serve with Potomac’s environmental community partners, including Rock Creek Conservancy and Common Good City Farm. After their off-campus service, students participate in service projects on campus, which include making miniature garden starters for preschoolers at Higher Horizons.
Service Learning motivates students to better understand the world around them and teh reciprocity that comes with giving. As a result, they find important convictions for what matters to them when it comes to serving their local community, the nation, and the world.Jeremy Sandler, Teacher
