The print's distinctive feature is its cyan blue shade, which results from its exposure to ultraviolet light.

Grades 10 and 11 Community Action Days

Grades 10 and 11 began their year of service together last Thursday and Friday as part of our Community Action Day Service Learning program. In advisory groups, students learned about, selected, and visited one of 18 local community partners across the DMV over the two days. Following their morning of service in the broader community, students returned to campus and participated in different “Changemaker Projects,” which offered an opportunity to continue serving others and our natural world on campus. Some students chose to serve our school community by removing invasive species on campus with Sean Conroy and Albert Pingree or reading and playing with Lower School students. Others chose to continue to serve the broader community by making birthday kits for the students of Second Story in Vienna, making welcome home kits for clients of New Hope Housing, or making literacy kits for the students at Arlington Housing Corporation. Check out galleries from grade 10 and grade 11

Many thanks to our community partners for hosting our students, for taking the time to educate them about the needs in our community, and for the ongoing important work being done in the greater DMV. Follow them on social media to learn more about the great work that they do:

Grade 9 Retreat Was a Great Experience

On Thursday and Friday of last week, the ninth grade traveled to YMCA Camp Tockwogh in Worton, Maryland, for two days of class bonding and fun. They spent time engaging in the many activities the camp has to offer, including archery, ax throwing, and a high ropes course. They also enjoyed some quality time together in both advisory groups and as a whole class. Perhaps the most exciting moment of the trip was the amazing sunset over the Chesapeake Bay during our beach party on Thursday evening. Thank you to our excellent hosts at Camp Tockwogh and our Class of 2027 for making this first full class experience a memorable one.

    Grade 12 Retreats to Chincoteague

The Class of 2024 successfully navigated a presidential motorcade and a temporary closure of the Bay Bridge to take advantage of time and beautiful weather together in Chincoteague, Virginia, last week. The class shared meals together, biked and hiked the trails of the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge, spent an afternoon on the beach, and reflected on their goals for the year. In these reflective moments and in conversation with each other and faculty, our seniors stressed the importance of engaging with their community, reaching out to old friends, being vulnerable with one another, and bringing conscious and intentional positivity to their role as school leaders. Getting away from the DMV, enjoying the outdoors, and taking advantage of a respite from our hectic schedules to connect and prepare for the year – this is what the Senior Trip is all about! Special thanks to all our chaperones and advisors for taking time away and executing a smooth and memorable experience.

    Health and Wellness Programming

This past Friday, our eleventh graders had the opportunity to work with Dr. Bonnie Zucker, a licensed psychologist and one of the DMV’s top therapists. They engaged in a discussion about the stressors they are facing, the effects they can have, and strategies and skills they can utilize to mitigate stress and build resilience.

This past Thursday, we provided sexual health education as part of our tenth graders' health and wellness programming, focusing on Potomac’s key skills of decision-making, self-care, reducing risk, and community care. Students worked with Dr. Jenna Messman, the founder of WE CARE Collaborative, who serves as the Sexual Health Program Coordinator at the University of Maryland Health Center.

Sophomores also spent their retreat day on campus thinking about community. The day began with some time focusing on what we owe the communities we belong to outside of Potomac. They then drilled more into what community looks like at Potomac, thinking about “mattering,” or how we value ourselves and are valued by others here. They also discussed how the pressure to be perfect can be detrimental to community and individual wellness. The final session centered on personal reflection and goal setting, which will be part of the student-led parent-advisor conferences later this year.
