Opening Week Starts in Potomac Style

It’s great to be together again for the 2023-24 school year! Yesterday, arriving buses were met with cheers, music, and high-fives from the Potomac Panther and members of SAC (the Senior Athletic Committee). The morning was filled with Panther spirit and excitement for what the year will bring. View the Opening Day gallery

New-to-Potomac students arrived on campus Tuesday for their orientations. Thanks to the current Panthers who were on site to help give tours and make our new students feel welcome! Our newcomers participated in activities designed to familiarize them with the campus, classrooms, and faculty.

We look forward to the Opening Assembly this Friday, September 8, at 9:00 am in the Upper School Quad. Parents of kindergartners and seniors are invited to attend the Opening Assembly in person; other parents and family members can watch it via livestream.

Friday’s Welcome Back Cookout, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm, will be a great opportunity for our entire community to celebrate the start of the new school year. Please come out and be part of the fun!

We bet those alarms were a bit jarring this week, rousing our middle schoolers bright and early so they could get to their buses in time and start connecting with all of their classmates. We are very excited about this school year and welcome our new students and their families to our community.

    Student Assemblies Galore This Week

In addition to attending the K-12 Opening Assembly tomorrow morning, Middle School students engaged in two other assemblies this week. Ready, Set, Go!

On the first day of school, the IS welcomed 184 excited and energized seventh and eighth graders. The students spent time getting acquainted with their teachers, learning their schedules, enjoying break time, and meeting new friends.

The previous day, 21 new-to-Potomac students spent their morning getting to know one another during a fun-filled orientation. They played games, discussed their concerns about the transition to a new school, and enjoyed a barbecue lunch with IS student council members and faculty.

    Upcoming IS Parent Events

We hope that you will join us for one of our upcoming parent information sessions, which will be held in the IS Choral Room. Parents of eighth graders will meet on Tuesday, September 12, from 8:30 to 9:45 am, and parents of seventh graders will meet on Thursday, September 14, from 8:30 to 10:00 am.

Looking Forward to Grade 8 Bonding Day!

Friday, September 22, will be our grade 8 "Bonding Day!" This day of fun and team-building will kick off the eighth grade year. Students will leave campus at 3:15 pm on their regular bus.

    Signing In and Out Reminders

For safety and accountability, students who arrive late must sign in with Ms. Joleen Hyde. Parents picking a student up early can “double park” in the IS lot while their child signs out before leaving campus. If students return, they must stop by the office and sign back in. If a student will not be returning to campus, we ask that the parent please make an update in SchoolPass. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

IS Tech Reminder Gets Creative and #Trendy

The IS Tech team shared helpful reminders with seventh and eighth grade students yesterday. The video offered tips to care for, and respect their school-issued devices, like keeping the plastic cases on, ensuring Chromebooks are always charged the night before, and using them for academic purposes only. Please watch this video in its entirety to see just how committed our teachers are to ensuring this important message is received.

Seniors and College Counselors Kick Off a New Year

College Counseling began the school year by greeting seniors on Tuesday morning for their annual meet-up. This year's class has a good head start already in the college application process. This summer, students had several opportunities to engage in essay workshops and continued essay and application work. The college counselors updated students on the college application process and explained the steps on how to use the Common Application in conjunction with Scoir. The counselors also discussed the Statement of Understanding and explained expectations for early decision applicants. Students also had an opportunity to speak with their individual college counselor.

Girls Varsity Soccer Back at It

The girls varsity soccer team (PGVS) traveled to St. John's HS on Thursday to take on the number one seed in the DMV. Last year, PGVS handed St. John's their only loss during their 19-0-1 season, and this year seemed to be no different. Though the Panthers outplayed the Cadets for most of the game, it ended in a 1-1 draw.  Charlotte Parry ’27, playing in her first game for PGVS, scored a second half goal on a great feed from Alden Marin ’26. The Cadets squeezed in a late goal to earn a draw, yet our girls battled for 80 minutes against a talented team and left the field with their heads held high. PGVS has plenty of starters returning this season as they look to defend their ISL AA tournament championship from last year!

Girls Cross Country Starts Season Off Strong

Eight girls' cross country team members started their season over the weekend at the Trials of Miles meet in Leesburg, Virginia. Ninth graders Helena Zhai and Mary Parker Stump competed in their first cross country races for the Panthers. Additionally, senior Audrey Rentzepis and junior Arielle Kouyoumdjian ran smart tactical races to earn 5th and 6th place in the varsity race. The Panthers are excited to run the full team this Saturday, September 9, at the Monroe Parker Invitational.

Boys Cross Country at Trials of Miles

The Potomac boys cross country team also had a great start to the season at the inaugural Trials of Miles meet. Ninth graders Lakan Singson and Sawyer Storm completed their first XC races in the freshman 2-mile event. Potomac also had runners in the JV and varsity races, ending the night with several top 25 performances. Highlights of the meet were top 10 finishes by both the JV (7th place) and varsity (5th place) squads. Senior co-captain Sasha Minsky led the way with an overall runner-up finish in the varsity race. Avi Agrawal ‘26 was Potomac’s top JV finisher in 12th. Juniors Noah Altschuler and Finn Nagoski also finished in the top 25 in the JV race. Trip Moser ’26 showcased the hard work he put into his summer training by racing to a stunning 43 second personal record to run second for the varsity team. Senior co-captains Max Zeldes and Alex Mathews finished in the third and fourth scoring positions for Potomac, with fellow senior Matt Brow rounding out the Potomac scorers for the varsity race.

    Volleyball With the Wins!

In a fantastic season start, the JV and varsity volleyball teams had impressive wins against Holy Child and Trinity Christian. The JV team won both matches in just two sets, thanks to the great teamwork of sophomore setter Gianna Bognet and junior Karrington Hayes. Sophomore Michele Horton and freshman Olivia Youmans stood out with unreturnable hits.

The Panthers varsity team had a tough match against Trinity Christian but came out on top. Freshman Sophia Grimm and juniors Skylar Giuliani, Zora Burrell, and Adalena Rodgers consistently attacked the ball well. On defense, junior Alexis Vaughan and freshman Lara Senyuz made important digs to help the team win. These strong performances are a promising start to the season.
