This article from Child Mind Institute offers some helpful tips. Dr. Lisa Damour, who spoke with parents at Potomac last year, also has a podcast episode with tips for supporting your child through tricky interactions with relatives during the holidays.

    Invention Convention Inspires

Fifth graders showed their entrepreneurial chops last week during the annual Invention Convention.  The students brainstormed an idea to create something that would improve their lives, then made a prototype of their concept and presented their work on a colorful display board.  With inventions such as the Musical Organizer 3000, Kneespenders, Scrocs, Rebound-o-Matic, and The Book Hook, we know that our future is in the good hands of these aspiring scientists.

Morphed Portraits: Half Self-Portrait / Half Animal

Building on observational drawing skills and knowledge about proportions of the human head and facial features, Mrs. Steel’s grade 8 students were challenged to morph themselves with an animal of interest. Choosing an animal that they admired or felt an affinity for, students researched and wrote about what they had learned. They next found reference photos of their animal, determining interesting and seamless ways to combine half of their human face with half of their animal's face in a graphite drawing. The artwork can be seen on the first and second floors of the IS hallways and online.

    Best in Snow!

The Intermediate School kicked off its first cookie decorating contest during an advisory last week. Grade 7 and 8 students were paired in their IS CUP color team. Meriwether Godsey provided the unfrosted sugar cookies, and students were charged with decorating them. There were four categories: Best in Snow, Abstract Holiday, Winter Activities, and Classy Cookie. Each group selected their best for each category, and the Meriwether Godsey staff then judged the final submissions. Take a look at the final submissions and winners in each category. Here are some pictures from the collaboration within groups.

    Celebrating Chanukah with JSA

During the Community Lunch on Monday, December 11, the Jewish Student Alliance (JSA) hosted a Dreidel Casino for students in the Upper School. Dreidel is a game played by spinning a four-sided top (a dreidel), each side bearing a specific letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Winners of the game win chocolate candy called gelt. Dreidel is a traditional game played by Jewish children throughout the world during Chanukkah, the Jewish holiday that commemorates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem after it was recovered from the Greeks in the 2nd century, when a small quantity of oil used to light the Temple's candles somehow miraculously burned for eight days. In keeping with the tradition of serving foods cooked in oil, the JSA served donuts during their celebration.

Sustainability and Latin American Studies Join Together

In December, Mrs. McLane’s Sustainability & Climate Change class and Mr. McLane’s Topics in Contemporary Latin American Studies class came together to watch Opening the Earth, a documentary film in Quechua, Spanish, and English. As part of their food unit, Sustainability & Climate Change students learned about the problems presented by the loss of biodiversity in food crops and the challenges of large-scale sustainable food production. Students in Topics in Contemporary Latin American Studies explored the interconnectedness of the potato in relation to global economic topics and the preservation and celebration of indigenous Quechua culture in rural Peru. Students from these classes created interdisciplinary, bilingual displays to share their learning.
