Thanksgiving Assembly Highlights Gratitude

Last week’s schoolwide Thanksgiving Assembly was a celebration of community and gratitude, with a common theme that centered around finding appreciation for the little things. The program featured remarks by Head of School John Kowalik, reflections on gratitude by student and faculty speakers, and – of course – the famous Turkey Tango! We were also treated to musical selections by various student ensembles.

In addition, Potomac’s 2023 Generosity of Spirit Award was presented to Coach and Grades K-8 Physical Education Teacher Barb Mays and Security Guard Marc Lucas. Read more in the story below.

Many thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s Thanksgiving Assembly meaningful and memorable. Speakers included: Monroe Stein-Sapir (Grade 3), Hobeth Morales (Grade 6), Sejal Satoskar (Grade 8), Milad Yaquoby (Grade 12), and Mr. Bill Peery (US faculty). Enjoy photos from the event.

Two Recipients Honored with Generosity of Spirit Award

Potomac’s Generosity of Spirit Award is given annually at the Thanksgiving Assembly to a faculty or staff member who exemplifies Potomac’s core values, demonstrates “generosity of spirit,” and inspires others through their actions. This year, the award was presented to two highly respected members of our community: Coach and Physical Education Teacher Barb Mays and Security Guard Marc Lucas.

Coach Mays, a Potomac employee for 28 years, is described as “an outstanding educator and coach.” She has dedicated her entire career to empowering young people through physical education and athletics. A former dual sport college athlete at George Mason University, Coach Mays has played an integral role in Potomac’s girls’ field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse programs. She also created and runs the Girl Power Sports & Leadership Camp, designed to encourage young girls to express themselves through sports and help develop self-confidence.

Mr. Lucas, described as a “tremendous ambassador for the school,” is an officer committed to the safety, security, and well-being of the entire Potomac community. Mr. Lucas joined Potomac in 2013 after a three-decade career in law enforcement, including nine years as an FBI police officer. He is one of the first people to arrive on campus each morning. During the remote work days of COVID, he was at his post every day. The positive impact Mr. Lucas has on our community and guests is invaluable.

 Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

Once a Panther, Always a Panther

The Friday after Thanksgiving was a picture-perfect day for the Annual Alumni Fall Games. This event brings our whole community – alumni and current students, current and past parents, and faculty – back together on campus for fun, friendly competition, and fellowship. The day started with the Hale Stevenson Ross ’14 Memorial Run hosted by classmates Adam Moses ‘14 and Hunter Heflin ‘14. Then, alumni and current students had the chance to show off their skills on the squash court, lacrosse field, soccer pitch, and basketball court. A BIG thank you to coaches Glenn Adamec, Precious Barnes, Levi Franklin, Matt Marriott, Ross McEwen, and Steve Hufford for making this a magical day for everyone!

We hope to see everyone at the games again next year! View the photo gallery

Our next Sharing Assembly will be on Friday, December 8, at 11:05 am. We will feature Ms. McIntire's first grade class, Mrs. Hoffmann's and Ms. Jackson's second grade classes, and Ms. Smalley's third grade class.

Grade 2 Visits the National Museum of the American Indian

Second graders recently took a field trip to the National Museum of the American Indian! Students were able to explore and think about how culture is conveyed through stories, dance, music, art, and values. Teachers helped students find examples of how where you live affects how you live. It was an educational day, and the students enjoyed the museum.

    Third Graders Deliver Book Donations

On Tuesday, Ms. Smalley's third grade class visited Falls Church McLean Children's Center to deliver books selected by the third graders at the Book Fair. Our students were able to share our love of reading and generosity of spirit with the preschoolers at FCMLCC through reading and playing. Thanks to our community's generosity, we donated one book for each student at the center to build their home library and nurture their love of reading.

    It's Cold Outside; Bundle Up!

Lower School students will have recess outdoors, except when there is heavy rain or severe weather. Please be sure to send your child to school with a labeled coat, hat, and gloves. Our students greatly enjoy recess in the snow, so please send boots, gloves, and snow pants on snowy days. Students without boots or snow pants will still go outside but may only play on paved areas.

Please ensure that the clothing your child keeps at school still fits and is appropriate for the season. The items should be individually labeled with the child's name and sent to school in a labeled ziploc bag.

    Lost and Found: Please Check!

Please check our Lower School lost and found the next time you are on campus. It is located by the fish tank and the Gum Tree door. Our collection is growing! We also suggest you ask your child to check the bin.

Grade 6 Chorus Debuts New Thanksgiving Song

For the second year in a row, the sixth grade chorus composed a brand-new song and premiered it during the Thanksgiving Assembly! This year's challenge centered on the public-domain poem "Thanksgiving," written by American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox. Students chose which stanzas of the poem should be set to music; decided which lines would comprise the chorus and refrain of the song, and then improvised many different vocal melodies, eventually selecting some to bring the chosen text to life. The Sixth Grade Chorus is under the direction of Mr. Nadel and Ms. Ayre, with collaborative pianist Diane Carsten-Pelak. The world premiere performance can be heard here, at timestamp 59:40, and the sheet music is available here.

    Invention Convention is Next Week

Excitement is growing as our fifth grade students put the final touches on their amazing inventions and presentation boards! Parents are invited to see the products of their imagination and creativity at the “Meet the Inventors” event, which will take place next Thursday, December 7, starting at 1:30 pm, in the EPAC lobby. This is an open-house event; parents are welcome to come anytime between 1:30 and 3:00 pm. Our students are excited to share their creations with the Potomac community. All exhibits must be taken down and brought home at the end of the day.

    Winter Club Offerings

Our winter clubs began today. Please check out the list of offerings for our middle school students to enjoy. Students will have three weeks to try various clubs before deciding on the one(s) they would like to commit to for this cycle.

Real Me Club for Sixth Graders

The fall session of the The Real Me club for sixth grade girls finished strong before our Thanksgiving Break. During this club cycle, several Upper School students shared their experiences with Potomac’s sixth grade girls. We are grateful to these students and the other female role models for sharing their wisdom with the younger students. This club will resume in the spring session.

The Real Me club for sixth grade boys began today during the first day of our winter club session. With a format similar to the girls' club, Upper School role models will join the group to share their experiences of US life and what they have learned. Mr. Wolfe and Ms. Woods have assembled an exciting slate of guests for this session.

    After School Supervision

Friday's Tip-Off Tournament marks the start of what we hope will be successful basketball seasons for our boys and girls varsity teams. This weekend and throughout the winter season, we hope that our IS students will support the Upper School students and one another at athletic contests. However, please remember that students attending an IS or US athletic contests must be supervised by a parent. If the contest is taking place immediately after school, parents can meet their child at the event and should note this via a SchoolPass change and an email to Joleen Hyde. View the after-school policies that were reviewed with the students this morning.

Speech and Debate Continues Strong Performances

Ranked 79 in the nation, Potomac’s speech and debate team has had several strong performances this year. In late October, 18 debaters competed in the 40th Annual Florida Blue Key tournament at the University of Florida, placing fourth against larger Florida programs. While at UF, Taylor Burris '24 placed second in both extemp and impromptu speaking. Ethan Maher '25 placed third in congressional debate.

Separately, 41 team members recently traveled to Philadelphia for the Villiger tournament at St. Joseph's University. It was our program's best Villiger performance in memory, placing fourth overall against some of the nation's best programs. Potomac students faced and won many rounds against the nation's first- and third-ranked programs at Villiger.

The most notable wins came in the final round of congressional debate as Armaan Sethi '26 and Sebastian Gardner '25 finished first and second, respectively. Those performances were backed up by Adrian Atwater '24 and Maher, who also advanced to the finals. Burris and Hannah de Souza ’25 continue their leadership in speech events with a season-long series of high placements.

Two additional debaters won the inaugural Brown University Public Forum tournament in early November. Congratulations to Sasha Leifer '26 and Tristan Mankovsky '27 on their championship.

    Grade 12 Community Action Day

On November 16, Potomac seniors engaged in their final Community Action Day, supporting 13 community partners across the DC metro area, including Cameron's Chocolates, the Greater DC Diaper Bank, and Higher Horizons. In the afternoon, the students selected a Changemaker Project, led by peer senior leaders, to continue serving others on campus. Making an impact both within and outside of our Potomac community, the seniors created 30 grab-and-go snack packs for families at Ronald McDonald House, prepared the LS and MS garden beds for the winter, boxed and sorted books to prepare our donations from the Book Fair, and engaged with Lower Schoolers. View a gallery of photos from the day and check out the full list of our community partnerships.

To feature the work and mission of our partners, the Upper School Service Learning Club took over Potomac’s Instagram stories that day. Check out the highlights @potomacschool to see the day from their eyes.

US Musicians Slay at Fall Concert

The Upper School Fall Concert was a highly entertaining evening of music that featured more than 130 performers across six ensembles. The audience enjoyed elegant string orchestra pieces written by Josef Haydn and Hawaii's Queen Liliʻuokalani and a not-quite-as-elegant piece popularized by Carmen Miranda. The band performed arrangements of well-known music by John Williams and Edward Elgar and newer selections by Balmages and Ziek. Jazz selections included pieces popularized by Art Blakey and Maynard Ferguson. The evening also included choral performances of 16th- and 20th-century madrigals, a Beatles classic, a modern setting of the Sanctus, and sophisticated handbell showpieces by Michael Sherman and Michael Mazzatenta. The evening concluded with the honors handbell ensemble performing varied works by Helman, Arnold Sherman, and Sallie Lloyd and a setting of "What a Wonderful World." Enjoy photos from the concert, and listen to the recording

    Grade 10 Health Education Programming

Every year, we provide health education programming for our tenth grade students. During Panther Time on Monday, sophomores worked with Madeleine Moore. Ms. Moore has an academic background in public health and has experience leading health and wellness education programs in secondary and higher education settings. In addition to working with the WE CARE Collaborative, Ms. Moore currently serves as the alcohol and other drug program coordinator at the University of Maryland Health Center.

US Students Visit National Portrait Gallery

On Tuesday, students in Advanced United States History visited the National Portrait Gallery to see part of the permanent collection exhibit titled, Out of Many; Portraits from 1600 to 1900. Students examined the artist's choices about how the subject was portrayed and analyzed the museum curators' descriptions of the paintings. The knowledge gained from this experience will be applied to a unit project later this winter when students design their museum exhibits about American experiences during the Civil War. Students will choose what to include in their exhibit and how to frame those items in a historical context. The trip was a great reminder of the many museum opportunities we have in our area.
