A Note from John Kowalik

Like many of you, I have been devastated by the recent terrorist attack in Israel and the death of innocent people. The escalation of war and the continued horrific impact on the people of Israel, Gaza, and across the region are of grave concern. It is a stark reminder of how fragile peace is around the world.

In the midst of tragedy, our focus is always on the needs of our students and how we can best support them. This week, our faculty and staff leveraged the resources below to guide conversations if these events were brought up by students. You may find these resources helpful for your own conversations with your family.

Additionally, we want to alert you to horrific images and videos being posted on social media apps such as TikTok and Instagram, and likely more to come. We are concerned about the impact of this content on students, especially younger children. We encourage you to be extra attentive to your child’s well-being and use of social media.

What Day Is It? The Logic Behind Potomac’s New Schedule

Do you find yourself asking, “what day is it?” a little more often? As we have settled into the beginning of the school year, we've begun to adjust to our new six-day rotation. The three crucial building blocks behind the new schedule include rotation of days vs. days of the week, tumbling blocks, and intentional community time. What exactly does that mean? Read insights from Sarah Beck, assistant head of school for academics, as she breaks down some common questions.

Fall Frolics is Happening (Inside)!

If you have been tracking the weather for this weekend, you will know there is a significant chance of rain on Saturday.  Good news! We have the perfect rainy-day activity for you-- Fall Frolics!  Join us for our beloved traditions, including games, prizes, bake sales, inflatables, and more!  Check out a map of all the indoor activities we will offer.

Parking: Our campus will be bustling on Saturday morning, and parking may be limited. We will have a shuttle service starting at 10:00 am from the Langley High School (6520 Georgetown Pike, McLean) parking lot, where we will have overflow parking.

Last Chance to Volunteer: We need YOU! We currently need 48 volunteers for shift 3 (12:15 to 1:15 pm) and 44 volunteers for shift 4 (1:00 to 2:00 pm).  If you have not signed up already, please register ASAP. Fall Frolics will only be as successful as the support we have from you, and we do not want to close down activities because we lack proper supervision.

COVID-19 Protocol Reminder

We have received a number of questions about our protocol for COVID-19. The school’s current protocol follows the CDC guidelines for isolation after testing positive:

  • Remain at home, in isolation, for a minimum of 5 days from symptom onset or 5 days from the date of the positive test if asymptomatic. The first day of symptoms, or the date of the positive test, is considered day zero.
  • After the tenth day, masking is no longer required.

On our Health Services page on CampusNET, you can find additional details on reporting a COVID case, if a member of your household has COVID, and more.

KG Halloween Parade is Coming Up

The Kindergarten Halloween Parade will begin in the K-1 hallway at 8:30 am, on Tuesday, October 31. Head of School John Kowalik and Head of Lower School Donnette Echols will lead the procession of characters through the halls. The best photo opportunities will be on the LS playground and in front of the US Tundra Building. We ask students to come to school dressed in costumes, ideally over their regular school clothes. After the parade, our costumed kids will transform back into kindergarteners (a.k.a. change back into their regular clothes) and resume their school day.

Fourth Grade Field Trip Next Week

The fourth grade will travel to Great Country Farms in Bluemont, VA, on Thursday, October 19, for a day of fall fun. Forces of Motion in Grade 5

Fifth graders are off to a great start in science class! They learned to apply the scientific method while exploring Newton’s Laws of Motion. The ultimate goal is to learn to answer their own scientific questions by creating a hypothesis and then testing their ideas with a series of experiments. Their observations often lead to more questions and more experimenting. A highlight of the unit came as students studied the third law of motion, “every action has an equal and opposite reaction,” by launching pressurized water-bottle rockets. Students demonstrated the ability to isolate variables such as the size of the bottle, the amount of water used, and the amount of pressure we put the bottles under. After the experiments, students returned to the classroom to watch slow-motion videos of the launches. They discussed their observations as a group and then drew conclusions about what they saw happening and the various forces involved. The hands-on nature of our Forces and Motion unit makes for a lot of fun learning in the fifth grade science lab. Watch students sing their Forces of Motion song in Mr. Wolfe’s class.

    Pumpkin Spice and Autumn Nice!

Join us for a jolly "gourd" time at this year's MS Autumn/Halloween Assembly on Thursday, October 26, at 1:45 pm, in the Langstaff Auditorium. Parents are welcome to attend. Please note the following special dress request for the day of the show:

    • Top: plain long-sleeved shirt, all black or dark navy; please, no logos, text, or other decoration
    • Bottom: solid black or navy long pants (uniform navy pants are fine), leggings, or skirt with solid dark tights; no shorts
    • Footwear: dark socks (uniform navy socks are fine) or dark tights

Students should wear their usual uniform or PE clothes to school that day and bring their assembly outfit to change into after lunch and recess. They will not need their special clothes for the rehearsal, which will be held in the afternoon on Tuesday, October 24. A livestream link will be provided in next week’s Paw Prints.

    Indigenous People’s Day Assembly

Last Friday, the Upper School gathered in the Crossroads to recognize Indigenous People's Day. The assembly began with a land acknowledgment read by Nadia Pardesi, Lower School math specialist and DEI coordinator. Following this acknowledgment, Charaun Wills, Upper School science teacher and DEI coordinator, helped to explain the purpose of land acknowledgments and the purpose of our assembly. Robert von Glahn, Upper School history teacher, and grade 12 dean, and Austin Davis, Upper School English teacher and director of student life, then walked our students and faculty through an activity that would help not only acknowledge the history of indigenous people but center their voices in describing the present reality of their communities. To conclude the assembly, students were encouraged to visit a map produced by Native Land Digital to explore which indigenous communities have lived in places important to them. Once students identified these communities, they followed links provided in the map to learn more. Overall, students and faculty alike were able to identify the historical presence of indigenous peoples in our country and challenge commonly held myths and stereotypes about indigenous peoples and their communities.

Seniors Share Reflections from WWII Legacy Trip

Sponsored by the Byrnes Family Foundation, the Charles Kenney World War II Legacy Trip honors the legacy of Charles Kenney and provides the opportunity for three to four rising seniors at Potomac to travel to Paris and Normandy to gain first-hand experience of the realities of World War II. During a recent dinner hosted by Flint Hill School, Maddie Magielnicki, Rachel Robbins, Zach Lighthammer, and Laith Weimer presented their profound reflections on their summer journey to France's important memorials and historical sites. Speaking with heartfelt sincerity, they spoke about the importance of remembering and honoring American soldiers of World War II and exploring the lasting impact of their sacrifices on French soil. Alongside four other students from Flint Hill and chaperones from both schools, our students also recognized the powerful educational and emotional impact of walking through history – of treading the sands of Omaha and Juno Beach, of visiting the somber Normandy Cemetery, and of experiencing first hand, the many important sites in France that have borne witness to our collective past.

    PSAT/NMSQT Goes Digital

Sophomores and juniors will take the new digital PSAT/NMSQT in school on Tuesday, October 24, at 8:15 am. Students met with their advisors last week to go through a Digital Readiness Check with the Bluebook App on their computers. Through Bluebook, students have access to a full-length practice test so they may get used to the new format. Students will also meet with our college counselors this month for an overview of what to expect and reminders of what to bring to the testing room. Juniors will take the test in the Engelhard Library, and sophomores will be assigned to classrooms in the East Building. Students with extended time will also be assigned to classrooms. Students should bring their fully charged computer with the installed Bluebook App, a pencil or pen, an approved calculator (although there is also one embedded in the digital test), and their computer power cord. They should not bring cell phones or smartwatches into the testing room.
