Welcoming Our New Faculty and Staff

Things to Know

Keeping Our Community Healthy

As we begin a new school year, this is an excellent time to remind each other about our collective responsibility to keep our community healthy! We encourage you to exercise simple preventative measures recommended by the CDC, including keeping your child home if they feel ill.  Please notify the school if your child contracts a contagious illness such as strep throat, pink eye, RSV, chickenpox, COVID-19, or influenza.

We continue to follow the CDC guidelines for isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.  You can find the details of our COVID protocol on the Health Services page of CampusNET.  While we will no longer provide virtual learning options for students unable to attend school due to illness,  we will provide students with make-up work, and provide any necessary support upon their return.

Transportation Reminders for Next Week

Our team has been busy preparing to welcome our students back on buses for their first day of school next week! This recent letter from the Transportation team details updates and reminders to help families stay safe and informed.

Save the Dates! Community Events Calendar

We hope you find this 2023-24 Community Events Calendar resource helpful as you make plans to attend Potomac’s signature community events throughout the year. We hope to see you all at the first event – the Welcome Back Cookout on September 8.

Parent Association Welcome Back Coffee

The PA Welcome Coffee will take place on Thursday, September 7, at 8:15 am at the Culp Family Courts in the Spangler Center for Athletics and Community. Head of School John Kowalik and PA Chair Jan Leu will usher in the new school year by offering a warm welcome to all.

Representatives from the PA’s volunteer committees and PA division leaders will be present to greet you and provide details about opportunities for involvement. This is an excellent chance for new and returning parents to mingle with fellow parents and learn how to get involved! We hope that you will RSVP and join us.

FAPS First Meeting and Campout Registration

This school year's first Fathers Association of The Potomac School (FAPS) meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 12, from 8:30 to 9:30 am, in the Fisher Family Dining Room. All parents and caregivers are invited to attend.

Registration is now open for the FAPS campout scheduled for Saturday, September 30. The overnight event will be held at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston and is a great community builder. Come “tent out” for the night with other families of students in grades 6 and below.

    Lower School

Welcome, and Welcome Back to LS

In less than a week, the Lower School hallways will again bustle with excitement as we welcome new and returning students. Soon, your family will receive a letter from your child's teacher welcoming you to your new classroom community. This note will give your child a "sneak peek" of what to expect on that first day of school. These letters will be mailed today, August 31! Class lists will be available on CampusNET by noon on Saturday, September 2. Please remember that these lists are final, and no changes will be made. We cannot wait to see everyone next week!

    New Students and Families Event

We look forward to greeting students and families new to the Lower School on Tuesday, September 5, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. This event provides the opportunity for new families to meet their parent reps and classroom teachers. Kindergarten orange carpool hang tags will be available, and light refreshments will be provided. This event will conclude at 1:00 pm so our faculty can continue to prepare for Opening Day.

    Water, Water, Everywhere

Keeping the body adequately hydrated is essential in maximizing brain function. Consistent with Potomac's focus on environmental stewardship, we ask that all students bring a reusable water bottle to school daily. Please be sure your child's water bottle is clearly labeled.

    SchoolPass Requirements

All parents are required to use the SchoolPass app to change their child's attendance - absence, late arrival, and early dismissal. We also ask you to email Joanna Huang and your homeroom teacher with any changes. Please be as detailed as possible and note all pertinent information in the "Notes" section.

    Carpool Reminders for 2023-24

Carpool privileges are restricted to kindergarten students and their siblings and will operate from 8:00 to 8:10 am. There will be an adult to greet your children until 8:10 am. There is only one carpool lane; all children must exit on the passenger side and only retrieve supplies from within the main car area. If you arrive after the adult greeters have gone inside, families are asked to park and walk their children to the Lower School Office and sign in. All other LS children are expected to take the neighborhood buses or free shuttles. If you miss your bus, instead of driving to campus, please take your child to the free shuttle bus at Langley Fork Park, which makes its final departure at 8:05 am. Thank you for your cooperation!

SchoolPass for Attendance and Transportation Changes

All parents are required to use the SchoolPass app to change their child's attendance - absence, late arrival, and early dismissal. Please be as detailed as possible and note all pertinent information in the "Notes" section.

    Don't Forget to Label!

As mentioned last Spring, an overwhelming number of uniform items were left around campus. We make every attempt to return items to their owners, but to do this, we need your help. Please take the time to label uniform items, particularly sweatshirts, fleeces, and jackets. We appreciate your assistance.

    Uniform Updates for 2023-24

Please note that there have been some changes to the Middle School Uniform code for the 2023-24 school year. Note that while students wear PE uniforms on PE days and "regular" uniforms on other days, the shoe requirements are not different – all black, all white, or black and white shoes only, regardless of the day. A letter was sent in July highlighting all the changes. Please direct any uniform questions to Kim Mackay or John Mathews

    Remember a Water Bottle

Consistent with Potomac's focus on environmental stewardship, we ask that all students bring a reusable water bottle to school every day. Please ensure your child's water bottle is clearly labeled with their name.

    MS Dean on Leave

As mentioned during the various spring coffees, Middle School Dean Shefali Sardar is on leave until mid-January. Feel free to direct all questions, concerns, and wonderings that you may have discussed with Shefali with John Mathews. He will be happy to help!

New MS Students and Parents Welcome

On Tuesday, September 5, at 1:00 pm, we invite new MS students and their parents to an orientation. Students may come to this event dressed casually (no uniforms required). We will gather in the Fisher Family Dining Room, where John Mathews will share a few remarks before taking the students on a tour. On this tour, students will be able to visit their homerooms and meet their teachers. Parents are welcome to talk with one another, visit the Panther Post, or take a walk around the campus while the students are having their tour. We look forward to seeing you next week!

    Class Lists on CampusNET

Middle School class lists will be posted by noon on Saturday, September 2. Parents may log in to CampusNET and go to the Middle School page to find the link with this information. Additionally, each homeroom teacher will mail letters to the students in their class on today, August 31. Hopefully, students will receive their letter in Saturday's mail.

    Welcome, and First Day Process

We are so excited to welcome our new and returning Middle School students to Potomac in just a few short days!
When students arrive on campus, they will gather in the MS Square and can head to their homerooms at 8:00 am, once they hear the MS bell. There will be plenty of adults available to help everyone find their way to their homeroom on the first day. Classroom instruction begins at 8:15 am. Please review your child's afternoon transportation plan so that they will feel confident about how to go home on the first day.

    Gearing Up for School

During the week of August 21, over 40 IS students were on campus for August Academics. Through engaging lessons, students worked collaboratively, met new friends, brushed up on writing skills, tackled math problems, learned about their brains, and practiced the skills found in the IS Habits of Learning.

    New Student Orientation Schedule

We are looking forward to welcoming our new students and families to Potomac's IS. All seventh and eighth graders new to Potomac are invited to an orientation and welcome session in the IS Choral Room on Tuesday, September 5, at 11:00 am. This event is a wonderful opportunity to get to know other new students and learn more about the IS. Lunch will be provided.

At 12:30 pm, ALL seventh graders will meet in the IS Choral Room for an informative and fun orientation session. At that time, they will meet with their advisors and receive information about the first days of school. All parents of seventh graders are invited to get acquainted with their child's advisor at 2:30 pm in the IS Commons. Students will be dismissed at 3:00 pm to meet parents and depart.

At 3:00 pm, new seventh grade families are invited to the Upper Commons in the IS to share cookies and lemonade with their mentor families. There is no formal presentation or agenda for this event; this informal gathering is one more opportunity for new families to connect with their mentor family before school begins.

Caroline Furnace Outdoor Education Trip 2023-24

For over 40 years, the entire seventh grade class has spent time at a camp in the Shenandoah Valley near Luray, VA. On September 27-29, our seventh grade students will enjoy outdoor experiences such as stream study, hiking, orienteering, canoeing on the Shenandoah River, and much more. Permission slips, a packing list, and other key information will be provided to students during the opening weeks of school and to parents at the grade 7 parent coffee on Thursday, September 14, at 8:30 am.

In the meantime, we are greatly in need of parent volunteers of both genders. If you are interested in joining us, even if it's only for one or two nights, please contact the grade 7 dean, Greg Mueller, at your earliest convenience. After connecting with Greg Mueller and completing the required forms and background check, the parents who will be chaperoning will need to attend a Caroline Furnace parent chaperone meeting on Wednesday, September 20, at 9:15 am, in the Spangler Team Room 154.

IS Athletics Uniform Store is Open

Students are required to wear uniform shorts and t-shirts during athletics. These are available for purchase through Potomac's online store through September 5. The access code, if needed, is P2TOMAC2. IS students are permitted to wear old practice uniforms if their family purchased them during a previous year. Uniforms ordered before August 25 will be distributed at the IS student orientation meeting on September 7.  Uniforms ordered after August 25 will be distributed upon arrival in late September.

    IS Opening Day Information

Students should wear the full Intermediate School uniform on the first day of classes. Read the complete uniform policy for more details. Upon arrival, students will go directly to their advisories/homerooms. Faculty members will be in the hallways to help students find their classrooms. Students should bring some basic school supplies and a water bottle, and teachers will let them know about anything else needed. All students will receive a snack for the first day of school.

    2023 Summer Reading Triple Check

If your child hasn’t finished their work, there’s still time. IS students are expected to read four books and participate in the postcard program. Read about the details of required summer reading for grade 7 and grade 8
