Closing Assembly Captures Potomac Spirit

The Potomac community officially ended the 2022-23 school year today during a K-12 Closing Assembly rich with joy, tradition, reflection, and heartfelt emotion. The program began with the ceremonial procession of seniors and kindergartners, with our youngest students presenting a flower to each senior lifer.

Mr. Kowalik spoke about how generosity of spirit defines our school and has the power to make the world a better place. SGA President Yabby Maelaf ’23 and President-elect Kasim Khapra ’25 also gave inspiring remarks, and musical selections were shared by the IS Handbell Ensemble, IS/US Orchestra, IS Chorus, Third Grade Chorus, and IS/US Band.

The assembly concluded with the presentation of awards to three members of the senior class: Peyton Zarate received the Edith Blair Award, Yabby Maelaf received the Seth-Smith Award, and Ali O'Brien received the Head of School Award.

The assembly was a wonderful way to bid farewell to the school year and look ahead to the adventures of summer and our community’s return to Potomac in the fall. Watch the recording of the event and check out the photos.

If you would like to experience Potomac’s Commencement tomorrow, June 9, at 10:00 am but are unable to attend in person, please enjoy the livestream viewing option.

    Hats Off to Grade 3

Last Friday was a state-ly occasion on campus as our rising fourth graders celebrated their research on America’s 50 states by sharing their knowledge, showing off their state hats, and singing their famous “Fifty Nifty” song. Hats off to our students! View the photo gallery.

    Note from Dr. Echols

As another school year comes to a close, I want to thank you, our parents, for your support to your children, our teachers, and me. This year was filled with discoveries, challenges, celebrations, and friendship. Each day, the energy and curiosity your children brought to their classrooms inspired us in countless ways. It has been a great privilege to share the school year with them and with you.

We look forward to exploring new adventures with our returning students in the fall. To those moving on to the Middle School or alternate adventures, we hope you visit the Lower School often because you will always be considered part of our family. Wherever your summer adventures may lead you, I hope you will savor each and every moment, and I can't wait to hear all about it in the fall! All my best, Donnette Echols

    Lost and Found Items Galore!

A large collection of clothing items was recently gathered from our many outside spaces and then washed (thank you, Mr. Conroy!). These are ready to go back to their forever homes. The clothing is currently located in the US wrestling room. Please stop by next week to peruse the findings in the wrestling room and the MS Square to take whatever your student misplaced...and then take more!

Grade 6 Brought Middle Ages to Potomac

Sixth graders brought the Middle Ages to Potomac with last week's annual Living History Showcase. The students researched the medieval era before deciding on roles they wanted to represent. The showcase featured bakers, merchants, knights, craftspeople, and even plague victims! The students worked collaboratively to develop skits and presentations that demonstrated the breadth of their learning around this fascinating time period. Great job, sixth grade! Enjoy a photo gallery from the event.

    Such Amazing Talent

Tuesday's annual Farewell Assembly was filled with incredible performances by middle school students who sang, performed, danced, and read poetry. We also bid a fond farewell to our sixth graders. With Mr. Mathews' annual tradition of calling out each sixth grade student by name (alphabetically and from memory!), our sixth graders are surely ready for Intermediate School. We wish them and all of our MS students a summer filled with family time, reading, creativity, and, most importantly, fun. View the photos from the MS Assembly or watch the recording

We would also like to thank the wonderful parent volunteers who dedicated their time this year to helping our students in ways too numerous to count. We look forward to seeing you again in September!

Senior Projects Showcase Range of Knowledge and Capabilities

This week, the Class of 2023 completed and presented their senior projects. The students worked on these during the month of May, sharing their progress in small groups once a week. At the conclusion of their projects, all of our graduates shared their work with their peers and faculty, effectively communicating what they learned, the challenges they overcame, and their hopes for future endeavors in presentations earlier this week. Ella Adamec, Alex DeCamp, Sienna Staver, and the team of Aidan Cullinan and Keyana McLennon, were selected to present at this year's Senior Project Showcase. Their projects included internships at the Washington Post, EEOC, and Head Start, and a pottery project that incorporated teaching Upper School faculty to create their own mugs on the potter's wheel. Additionally, the Upper School walked into the assembly to selections from Ben Schirmeier's band, All My Friends, who recorded an EP as part of his project and ended the assembly with a viewing of Andrew Lay's film documenting the Class of 2023.

The Class of 2023 is an accomplished, creative, and hard-working group. Their diversity of skills and interests was reflected in their projects and included rebuilding vintage MGs, writing, filing, and editing films, designing and constructing a new outdoor classroom for Potomac, writing and recording a full-length musical, researching and writing a guide for the use of AI in education, completing a variety of art projects, coaching, teaching, and mentoring younger students and athletes, and interning with our advancement office, farmers, a physical therapist, defense contractors, museums, journalists, and even at a butcher shop. Great job, class of 2023! You have so much to offer.

Empowering Summer Learning among Local Youth

Over the last two months, the US Service Learning Club engaged in a project to create 120 summer learning kits for rising first through fifth grade students served by Potomac's community partner, Arlington Housing Corporation (AHC). Club leaders conceived the idea for the service project in response to the learning loss experienced by AHC youth during the pandemic. To begin, club leaders brainstormed with education staff member Laney Parrott from AHC to plan the kit contents collaboratively. They partnered with Lower School learning specialists to identify developmentally appropriate enrichment games. Each kit includes math and reading games, a summer reading bookmark, and an "inspirational message" coloring page with a handwritten note from a club member. On Tuesday, Laney visited Potomac to meet student leaders and pick up the kits that will be used during summer camp and later gifted to provide at-home learning resources. Thank you to US students for helping empower summer learning among local youth!

    VPAC Theater Showcase Highlights Creativity

On June 6, senior Leo Marin performed a culminating exercise as part of Potomac’s Visual and Performing Arts Concentration. The purpose of the exercise is to allow seniors to synthesize and express as much of what they have learned over their time in the US theater program as they can in one single production. The showcase was performed, designed, and directed entirely by Leo and involved collaborators from the classes of ‘23 (Ella Adamec, Olee Banerjee, and Peyton Zarate), ‘24 (Elisa Germanis and Jack Morgan), and ‘25 (Noah Hess, Hugh Kanner-Bitetti, and Tucker Robbins). Leo and his cast-mates successfully tackled some challenging material, creating a compelling and creative performance. Congratulations to all involved!
