Thanks to Our Panther Pit Volunteers

Panther Pit

Thank you to all our parent volunteers for making the grand reopening of the Panther Pit a roaring success! Because of your dedication, we are able to serve over 200 Intermediate and Upper School students each day, giving them a place to recharge after school and before athletics. We’ve sold more than 3,000 bottles of Gatorade, 1,500 bags of Skittles, and 1,400 bags of popcorn these past three months. This video, created by Andrew Lay ’23, shows some of the Panther Pit fun we’ve had this year.

We are looking for volunteers to staff the Panther Pit this semester. If you have not volunteered with us yet this year, please consider signing up. Thank you again for being a part of the Potomac community. We look forward to seeing you in the Pit!

After-School Activities

Winter ETC Begins Next Week

Winter ETC classes and private music lessons begin next week. Be sure to mark your calendars and update SchoolPass for the days your child(ren) attend after-school classes. ETC's winter season runs January 9-March 9.

Extended Day Celebrates the Holidays

Before the break, Extended Day celebrated the holiday season with cookies and hot cocoa for students and their families. The students worked together to build gingerbread houses and decorate cookies. They also hand-crafted delicious cups of hot cocoa complete with toppings, whipped cream, and flavor straws. Some parents joined in on the fun, warming up on a cold December day with a cup of hot chocolate crafted by their child, with love – and lots of toppings. Ornament-making and spirited games of musical chairs added to the fun. One student showed their generosity of spirit when they shared their winnings from musical chairs with others. A merry time was had by all, as we embraced our amazing community.

YC5 Hits the Stage On Friday

Ms. Chung's fifth graders practiced their lines over the break and are excited to share their play, Many Moons, with their fellow MS students tomorrow, Friday, January 6. Parents are welcome to join us at 9:30 am in the Langstaff Auditorium or watch via livestream.

    Winter Clubs Begin Soon

On January 10, during a brief assembly, MS students will hear about the clubs being offered during the winter club session, which begins that same day. While some clubs will continue from the fall session, there will be many new offerings as well. We hope the students enjoy trying out some new activities!

    Pajama Day/Read-in on January 11

It seems like a lifetime ago (or at least last year!), but our students did an amazing job surpassing the MS book collection goal for Potomac’s annual Book Fair in November. In acknowledgement of this feat, MS students will enjoy a pajama day/read-in on Wednesday, January 11. They may come to school in their coziest pjs or other comfy clothes and will enjoy some quiet time in the morning with a good book. Fourth and sixth grades have PE on Wednesday, so students should choose their comfy clothes wisely and plan to bring athletic shoes in order to participate fully in PE activities.

    Grade 5 Parent Forum

Grade 5 parents are invited to attend a Parent Forum on Wednesday, January 11, beginning at 8:30 am, in the Spangler Team Meeting Room. Parent Forums are opportunities for parents to connect with one another and discuss topics related to their children’s age group.

MS Sharing Assembly and Lunar New Year Parade

The MS will host a Sharing Assembly on Friday, January 20, 9:30 am, in the Langstaff Auditorium. Students will perform songs, skits, dances, and more, both individually and in various groupings. Homeroom teachers will notify their class parents to let them know which students are participating.

Additionally, as part of their ancient Chinese civilization studies, the fifth graders will celebrate the Year of the Water Rabbit with our annual Lunar New Year dragon parade. The clanging, jangling, luck-bringing parade will travel through the LS and MS on Friday morning, just before our Sharing Assembly.

    Academic Spotlight Assembly

This Tuesday morning's assembly offered opportunities for several students to share about interesting and engaging project-based assessments they completed during the first semester. Two groups from James Gillespie's Advanced Python Programming class (seniors Ben Bartlett, Devon Cleaver, Rohan Iyer, Caroline Norton, Tea Picconatto, and Samantha Taylormoore) presented classic games that they coded; two students from Jeremy Metz's Advanced Ethics class discussed using an ethical framework to better understand and debate divisive topics such as the death penalty, gun control, and animal rights; and members of Mia Fisher-Phillips' ensemble theatre classes shared about a project where they designed make-up and costumes, using recycled materials, for a hypothetical performance. The creative ways our teachers are testing their students' knowledge and skills never ceases to amaze!

    Planning the Next Year

Each winter at the start of the course selection process, we offer a series of Planning the Next Year events for parents of rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Each of these events will take place at 6:30 pm in the Upper School Crossroads. Planning the Senior Year, for parents of juniors, will be held on Thursday, January 12; Planning the Junior Year, for parents of sophomores, will be on Thursday, January 19; and Planning the Sophomore Year, for parents of freshmen, will be on Thursday, January 26.

These evenings will provide an overview of the academic and co-curricular opportunities available in the year ahead. They will include presentations by the Upper School head, the Upper School director of curriculum and academics, the grade-level dean, and representatives from the College Counseling Office. Parents will hear about the course trajectories in each department and learn more about the course application and appeal processes.

During the academic day, students will receive an abbreviated version of the same presentation in a class meeting. Following each evening session, the slides and handouts from the presentation will be posted on CampusNET. If you have any questions about these programs, please reach out to Tory Virchow.

    A Wonderful Winter Lights Celebration

Prior to the break, Upper School students gathered for a beautiful assembly celebrating many of our holiday traditions. Personal remarks were delivered by Upper School Head Doug McLane, Upper School Director of Curriculum and Academics Tory Virchow, and seniors Marcel Gaskins, Hayes Nolin, Mayah Pedigo, and Manuela Prieto. In addition to the personal narratives shared, many of the Upper School ensembles and a capella groups filled the space with joyful music. It was a lovely way to send off the division for the holidays and begin the process of ringing in a new year. Enjoy the photos from this assembly.

    Girls Squash Defeats NCS

On December 14, Potomac’s girls JV and varsity squash teams played fiercely in their match against NCS, emerging with a 18-4 victory! Varsity team members sophomore Harper Kelly and junior Haley Coon won in three straight sets, while JV player sophomore Alex Bond won in two. Two of our seniors had tougher matches but ultimately won: Yabby Maelaf (11-6, 11-6, 4-11, 11-4) and Layah Nasr (11-6, 11-4, 3-11, 11-3). This was a great match for the Panthers!

Boys Basketball Finds Success on the Road

Flowers was also named to the BCCC All-Tournament team as the team won two of their three games in Richmond. Their current record of 8-5 is moving in the right direction as the team begins league play this week versus Maret.

    Swim Team Highlights
