Coral Club’s Smithsonian Field Trip
Students in the newly formed Happy Coral Club are interested in learning more about reef protection and restoration. To help with this goal, the club's leaders organized a field trip to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History to participate in the “Reefs Unleashed” student program. They completed hands-on work with Smithsonian scientists to learn how marine ecologists measure biodiversity in reefs without destroying the habitat. They also had the chance to put their science skills to work analyzing sample data from a reef and refining possible solutions for protecting and restoring the reef ecosystem.
