About the Potomac School Award for Exemplary Service
The Potomac School is a learning community grounded in a clear mission and strong values. Our goal is to prepare students for lives of purpose, achievement, and generosity of spirit. As individuals and as a community, we are guided by Potomac’s core values – courage, humility, integrity, respect, and perseverance – and by the belief that each person has the ability to affect change and the power to make a positive difference.
As we seek to live these ideals at Potomac, we also see them demonstrated outside our school community. The Potomac School Award for Exemplary Service was established to recognize individuals in the wider community whose efforts align with our school’s values and reflect our commitment to generosity of spirit. Recipients of this honor will, through exemplary service and leadership, make a positive difference in the lives of others and inspire the Potomac School community.
Process for Award Selection and Presentation
Each year, members of the Potomac community will be invited to nominate potential award recipients. This honor is intended for individuals outside the school community; thus, Potomac students, alumni, parents, trustees, administrators, faculty, and staff are not eligible to receive it.
A representative committee of Potomac community members will consider all nominations and recommend an award recipient. The committee’s recommendations will be presented to the Head of School and a designated trustee for approval and final determination of that year’s honoree. Nominations may be carried over for consideration in subsequent years.
Each year we present the Award for Exemplary Service at the Martin Luther King Day Assembly in January. It is our hope that the award recipient will offer brief reflections on the importance of service and “giving back.”
